Internet Tricks -- Social media has emerged as a powerful tool for personal branding, thanks to the robust growth in social technologies in the last decade. If you are a professional who wants to be visible to potential employers, then you have to develop a personal brand that reflects the desired “unique promise of value”. And where else can you showcase this if it’s not on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is a powerful social networking site that was launched in 2003. Since then, it has grown into a powerful professional networking hub with more than 259 million users around the world as of 2013

You will agree that opportunities in today’s world are very competitive. You really have to use every strategy and tactic to remain ahead of the park. Some professionals say social media is a waste of time, but that’s not true, at least when it comes to LinkedIn. So if you are not making effective use of the largest network of professionals in the world then you losing out big time.
Here are eight 8 ways to build your personal brand on LinkedIn.

1.      Flesh out your profile
Fleshing out your LinkedIn profile and updating it regularly is the first step to attaining authentication within your professional network.  An All-star LinkedIn profile markets itself. According to Mike H, an Engineering Recruiter at iMPact Business Group, an all-star profile was the only thing he needed to have several Fortune 500 firms looking for him like gold.  Recruiters are looking for people who can deliver and by coming ahead of other professionals in the search list, then you are most likely to get the job. Therefore, you should aim at achieving a 100% profile.

2.      Get into action: LinkedIn Groups
There are many LinkedIn groups you can use to map out your professional interests. Active groups with moderation are the best ones and have a higher potential to deliver great success.  Groups that are not moderated are not recommended, particularly that have discussions constantly interrupted by spamy promoters.
Always try to get a feel of the group’s agenda before hoping in. But I guarantee you that the productive ones will benefit you immensely by helping you learn, get connections, get opportunities, and get jobs.

3.      Grow your LinkedIn network
Expanding your network is one great strategy to increase access to opportunities. Apart from individual connections within your network, you can make use of groups to grow your LinkedIn network.  LinkedIn allows you to join up to 50 groups, just try to join every relevant group – from business, professional, to alumni groups.

4.      Grab the chance to show your expertise
Self promotion is often frowned upon in professional circles. So how do you get over it on LinkedIn? Well, inside LinkedIn there is a “Question and Answers” section pertaining to every industry. Always try to answer those questions because each time your answer is selected as the best, it automatically reflects on your profile and this earns you a lot of credibility.

5.      Update regularly
All Linked connections receive either weekly or daily updates on posts by someone within their networks.  Always try to post every other day or on weekly basis at least if you want to keep your contacts up to date on the strides you making on your professional front.  Prospects will be interested in people they interact with on regular basis and not dormant accounts.

6.      Recommendations and endorsements
Always remember to request recommendations from people you have done a great job for. Endorsements from colleagues or former colleagues are also a good way of establishing credibility on LinkedIn.  If you recommend your peers, they will definitely recommend you back.

If effectively used, your LinkedIn account will definitely help you achieve great success in your profession or business. Start using it today.
